Yixing Factory One Standard Shuiping Teapot, Hongtu Clay (late 1980s, approx. 100ml)
This standard shuiping (水平壺) teapot was produced by Yixing Factory One in the late 1980s. With a capacity of approximately 75ml, traditionally described as a four-cup size, it represents one of the most practical and recognizable Factory One forms from the period.
The pot is made from hongtu (紅土), or red clay, with the warm orange-red tone characteristic of many later Factory One utility wares. Compared with heavier or more porous zisha clays, this type of red clay gives a relatively direct and lively brewing response, preserving aroma well while adding a modest degree of softness to the liquor. It is a versatile material that works particularly well with oolongs, yancha, red tea, and puer.
The form follows the classic Factory One standard shuiping profile: rounded body, domed lid, simple loop handle, and a straight, practical spout. At around 100ml, it is especially convenient for solo drinking or small tea sessions and allows a concentrated leaf-to-water ratio without becoming too demanding to handle.
The base carries the familiar “Zhongguo Yixing” (中國宜興) seal used on Factory One production from this era.
This is not a rare showpiece, and that is exactly part of its appeal. It is a straightforward, dependable Factory One hongtu pot made to be used, with a practical size, classic proportions, and the brewing character that makes these late Factory One teapots such enjoyable everyday tools.
