Yixing Factory One Hongni Teapot, Late 1960s (80ml)
This small hongni (紅泥) teapot was produced by Yixing Factory One in the late 1960s. At approximately 80ml, it is a particularly refined example from the period, with compact proportions, careful finishing, and notably good lid fit for a standard Factory One production piece of its age.
The pot is made from the characteristic Factory One hongni of the 1960s, a fine red clay valued by many tea drinkers for its dense texture and relatively direct response in brewing. Compared with more porous clays, this type of hongni tends to interfere less with aroma while still softening the texture of the liquor slightly. In practice, it is especially well suited to teas where clarity, fragrance and structure are important, such as high-aroma oolongs, yancha, aged oolong and some puer. With use, the surface also develops a gentle sheen and a warmer, deeper tone.
The workmanship is especially attractive for a small Factory One pot. The body is compact and well balanced, the lid sits closely against the gallery, and the overall construction feels more delicate than many later mass-produced examples. Its small capacity makes it ideal for focused solo sessions and for teas that benefit from a high leaf-to-water ratio.
The base carries the “Zhongguo Yixing” (中國宜興) 6:4 seal, one of the characteristic Factory One marks associated with this period.
There are two small chips on the foot ring, both minor and entirely cosmetic. They do not affect the structure, stability, or daily use of the pot.
A very appealing small Factory One teapot that sits comfortably between collectability and practical use: early hongni, compact proportions, good workmanship, and a size that remains genuinely enjoyable for everyday brewing.
