Handcrafted Old Zini “Fang Gu” Teapot by Fan Juying
This fully handmade Yixing teapot is crafted by Fan Juying (范菊英), a senior-level ceramic artist known for her mastery of traditional teapot forms and subtle, balanced craftsmanship. It is made from lao zini (aged purple clay), a highly prized Yixing clay with excellent porosity and heat retention, ideal for coaxing out the richness of roasted oolongs or aged teas. Certificate and a photo of Master Fan holding the teapot is included.
The form is a refined interpretation of the classic Fang Gu shape, which was originally inspired by ancient bronze drums, featuring a wide, rounded belly and low profile. This generous inner space allows tea leaves to unfurl comfortably, making it especially suitable for tightly rolled Taiwanese oolongs such as Dong Ding or Alishan.
The pot’s proportions are calm and well-centered, with a clean, fluid line from spout to handle. Inside, a neat 9-hole filter provides smooth pouring, while the lid fits securely with a satisfying seal. The unglazed clay surface, when seasoned over time, will take on a soft sheen and deepen in color, capturing the trace of every brew.
This teapot offers both visual simplicity and quiet depth—an elegant and reliable companion for serious Gongfu tea practice.
