Zisha Teapot – “Bamboo Pagoda” by Zhao Zhiqin, 1980s Yixing Factory No. 1
This square-form “Bamboo Pagoda (塔竹)” teapot, made of black star clay (黑星土), was crafted in the mid-1980s during a transitional period in Yixing’s Factory No. 1, when many teapots bore no paper label, often referred to by collectors as the “no-label era”.
The pot features a classic bamboo-inspired design, with carved bamboo joints on the handle, spout, and a leaf-wrapped knop on the lid. The craftsmanship is exceptional, especially the fine applique clay work (貼泥) on the lid. Though it bears a small chip at the inner edge of the lid, the flaw does not affect its functionality or sealing performance.
This piece was made by Zhao Zhiqin (趙志琴), one of the skilled artisans of the time, and is stamped with her personal seal. Her works from this period often reflect the strong aesthetic and structural discipline of post-Cultural Revolution Yixing artistry, a balance of form, function, and poetic naturalism.
This elegant collector’s piece captures the subtle shift from 1970s artisanal purity to 1980s functional refinement, making it a wonderful artifact of its time.
