About

This batch of Gui Fei Oolong earned the silver prize in the prestigious spring tea competition held in Lugu (Deer Valley) township, a region renowned for its exceptional teas. Highlighting the rich roasting aroma and a velvety, rounded texture in the tea soup, this tea exemplifies the masterful roasting craftsmanship deeply rooted in Lugu's tradition. A delicate hint of honey lingers in the background, adding an elegant layer of complexity to the classic medium-roasted Dong Ding Oolong profile.

The primary aroma is a clean and refined roasted note, evocative of Longyan charcoal. Upon sipping, the tea reveals a gentle honeyed sweetness in its middle notes, seamlessly complementing the signature floral and woody base of Dong Ding Oolong. The aftertaste is smooth, full-bodied, and enduring, leaving a deeply satisfying impression.

This Gui Fei Oolong is crafted from a single cultivar: Chin-Shin Oolong. Unlike other versions of Gui Fei that might blend multiple cultivars to replicate the honeyed sweetness caused by the bites of little green leafhoppers, this tea showcases the purity and elegance of a single varietal. Roasting a single cultivar to perfection requires a high degree of skill and precision to preserve its nuanced aroma and subtle sweetness.

For roasted Oolong enthusiasts seeking an added layer of subtle honeyed complexity, this award-winning competition tea promises a unique and delightful experience.

Behind This Tea

In the long history of Taiwan's tea industry, Nantou's Lugu region has always been a vital core area, renowned for producing some of the finest oolong teas.

Gui Fei Oolong offers a distinctive twist among the renowned teas from the Lugu region. It has combined the natural honey aroma produced by tea leaves bitten by green leafhoppers with the characteristic roasted scent of traditional Dong Ding Oolong tea.

The name “Gui Fei” (meaning Imperial Concubine; some translate it as Duchess) first appeared in 1999, during a difficult period in Taiwan's tea history. That year, the destructive 921 Earthquake severely affected the Lugu area, disrupting transportation and making it hard for many tea plantations to be maintained. Left unprotected, the tea plants were bitten by green leafhoppers, giving the leaves a natural honey fragrance.
