This example is associated with the Japanese market, reflecting the long history of Yixing wares travelling beyond China and being adapted to different tea cultures.

The Julunzhu form is characterized by its full, rounded body, high domed lid and compact proportions. Unlike the later standardized shuiping teapots of the twentieth century, pieces from this earlier period often retain a slightly more individual, hand-finished character, with subtle irregularities in profile and construction that give them a very different presence in the hand.

The clay has matured to a deep reddish-brown tone, with a comparatively restrained surface and fine granular texture. Its rounded chamber and relatively generous internal volume make it particularly suitable for oolong, aged oolong, yancha and puer, especially teas that benefit from good heat retention and a softer, fuller presentation in the cup.

The base bears a Mengchen (孟臣) mark applied with a lead stamp, a feature seen on a number of older Yixing wares. By the late Qing period, the name “Mengchen” had long outgrown its association with the historical potter Hui Mengchen himself. In southern Chinese tea culture, “Mengchen pot” had become almost a generic term for the small Yixing teapots used for gongfu tea, and later generations continued to use Mengchen-style marks on such wares. Contemporary late-Qing sources already noted how widely Mengchen-marked small pots circulated.

What makes this piece particularly appealing is the combination of age, export history and practical form. It predates the standardized Factory One era and belongs instead to an earlier period when Yixing teapots were still produced through more dispersed workshops and circulated through regional and overseas trade.

Rather than being simply an old decorative object, this is a late-Qing teapot that remains very much usable today: a compact, well-proportioned vessel with the warmth and surface character that only long age can produce, and an evocative link to the early overseas history of Yixing tea ware.

Care Instructions

Not suitable for dishwashers or microwaves.

Gift Wrapping

Free gift wrapping and removal of price tags are available for gifts.
